9 Reasons Why Beach Sessions Are Awesome!

Okay, I’m just going to say it – I don’t think I could live anywhere that’s completely landlocked. I can’t imagine not having the ocean nearby!
Some of my best memories revolve around the beach. Collecting shells … splashing in the water … shallow pools of water to explore. Even making sandcastles you know are only temporary evokes a certain whimsical fatalism, doesn’t it? You know the sandcastle will soon be washed away, but, hearing the sea birds, listening to the grasses rustling in the breeze, feeling the sand underneath you – it all makes it okay. Even today, it’s hard to beat the feeling I get sitting along the water.
If you’re sitting, nodding your head, then I think it’s time for us to get together for a beach session. It just might be the best decision you make in 2022!
Read through my list of reasons why you should schedule your next session at the beach!

Beat the fall rush. We can certainly still photograph your session in the autumn, but by scheduling now, you’ll have the advantage of booking before my calendar starts to rapidly fill. Holiday cards designed and ready to go by October? Oh yeah!

Make a family day out of it. While we’ll certainly make memories during our time together, once our session concludes, why not continue to play in the water? Search for shells. Bring a blanket along and have a brunch or dinner picnic on the beach. Go fishing. Most of all, soak in this time with your loved ones.

The beach makes for a perfect playground. Who doesn’t love sand, sun, water and waves? No matter how old you are, the beach is the most superb place to play.

Golden Hour. You might have heard that photographers love scheduling sessions right around sunset. The light is terrific. Colors are vibrant. And the photos we’ll create together will be totally Instagram-worthy.

Wear what you want to wear. White tees and blue jeans be gone! (Or, wait, now that 90s are back, will we see the return of this trend, too? Hmmmmmm.) Dress up or down. Wear a fun floral print or an ethereal, flowy dress. I’m also always available to you to chat about wardrobe options for your session day, as well!

Beach sessions are breathtakingly scenic. And the images we create together will be priceless!

Looking Up Photography IMG_0577 web0368 Looking Up Photography

Sun or no sun, beach photos are exquisite. In fact, some of my favorite beach sessions have been photographed on cool, cloudy days. With the beach as our background, the photos will look wonderful in almost any weather.

You have that summer glow. If you schedule your session in the summer months, through about September, that sun-kissed summer skin really gives your images a little something extra.

Sweet Baby Milestone + Family Studio Session for Baby Tomas

It’s been a minute since I got to work with a mama who wanted to style a session that included outfit changes. Luckily, I was able to accommodate Gabriela’s request, get her cute family in front of the camera, and I’m SO happy with how it turned out! I’m also thrilled that, after her internet research and website portfolio reviews, Gabriela asked me to make this pretty come to life. Just wait until you see how Gabriela and Dino’s little sweethearts hammed it up in the studio!

Because Tomas has a possible egg allergy, Gabriela and I worked together to come up with an alternative setting for his first birthday portraits. These beautifully styled, oversized typeface letters, and some very minimal white and clear balloons, did the trick perfectly! I’d love to see more of my families go this route for birthdays.

0431 Looking Up Photography0744 Looking Up Photography0684 Looking Up Photography

These father-son and mother-son portraits have to be some of my recent favorites! What an amazing series this would be to display on a wall in the family home. Gabriela told me she intends to display these photos in many places in their home, including the master bedroom, living room, and in the kids’ bedrooms! It’s still such an awesome feeling, knowing how many families have my work adorning their walls, memories made and treasured.

While I adore photographing at beautiful outdoor locations in Connecticut, I love when families schedule portrait sessions inside the studio. When I look back through albums, I’m always struck by how classic images taken in the studio are. There aren’t usually many of these photos, which makes them all the more special!

You see … those visits to parks and the beach, etc. – they’re all great. But playing as a family – these are the moments that remind us where the heart is. I love when I can photography my clients in the studio. With that in mind, consider moving your family milestone session into the studio!

A Beautiful and Sunny Family and Maternity Session at the Beach!

What’s better than an evening at the beach with your family?! I’ll tell you what – add the celebration of a growing new life! Sessions at Greenwich Beach might just be considered a favorite pastime of mine. You just have to appreciate the beautiful backdrop and light! No matter where you are in your life, it’s always important to find time to document your family, and what better time than when your family will be growing. I created this special session with the help of Jessica, Ronaldo, and their daughter Natalia, whose newborn session I photographed in 2019. Check out all of the pretty below!

The grandparents were included in our session and I’m so in love with these photos! We did some relaxed, classic posing with the entirety of this gorgeous family. A mix of neutrals and that vibrant cornflower blue really completed the session gallery! All of this took place during the fabulous golden hour at Tod’s Point. Perfection!

A Beautiful Session at Tod’s Point with Fall Foliage Flair!

Last fall I had the chance to photograph the prettiest family. Katie and Alex’s family reminds me of the joy of having little ones on the move, and how fortunate we are to have such a beautiful ‘backyard’ to play in, here in Greenwich, Connecticut. While I was editing this session, I played some of my favorite autumn-inspired music and it was heavenly! Today I’m sharing a little bit of this perfect fall family session, with a little fall foliage flair. Scroll down to see all the sweet details, including a local Greenwich magazine feature!

Well, I’d love to begin by sharing this delightful magazine cover of Greenwich Neighbors magazine, published this month by Best Version Media. Katie used my photos for their feature and it turned out so gorgeous. You can also visit Katie’s blog, Witten Kitchen, here. It’s the little things, for me.

When I first saw this image of father and son from the back of my camera, I loved the expressions it held. It has just enough softness and movement in it with that amazing natural backdrop, and baby Rory’s extended hand. This session was inspired by family, the season, and the natural beauty of the place we call home. Allowing children to be children is a key element of any outdoor family session (or any session, for that matter). Kids add so much life and emotional color to an image, often bringing out the very best and most organic expressions in their parents as well. I love how Alex, Rory, and I capitalized on that, here, allowing Katie’s vision for her family photos to be brought to life almost effortlessly.

1300 Looking Up Photography1448 Looking Up Photography

For the final photo, I always like to get a snapshot of parents without their fabulous children. It can be easy to forget that kids exist because of parents – and not the other way around – and it’s good for both adults and children to see their love for each other shine on its own!

A Magical Beach Session for the Sweetest 2 Year Olds

I’m in love with the beach. If you’re a beach family, there is no better location for your family portraits than Greenwich Beach! And what’s better than getting together with one of your favorite client families for a birthday celebration on the beach (times two)?! The twins turned two, and mom wanted a family beach session with her special people, complete with sandy toes and plenty of splashing! I had the best time putting together this gallery, and it sure looks like they enjoyed themselves, too. The beach brings out the best in little kids, and this family knows how to have fun! Of course, the beach also provides a stunning backdrop for your family pictures.
As usual, I have plenty of photos for you to see!

Let’s Go to the Beach! It’s a Maternity + Family Beach Session

It’s a new year and I still have plenty to share from 2021! Let’s take a look at this adorable session! I had the pleasure of photographing Hien, Seth, and Kaia again. Kaia’s newborn session is a favorite of mine. You can take a look at it here! Hien contacted me to photograph their family again – not only because it was Kaia’s first birthday – but because the family is growing once more. She wanted to document both milestones and also include grandparents and other extended family. I happened to know just the place to capture this session, at the cutest little swath of beach right here in Connecticut. Not only is the location so pretty, but it’s an amazing spot for kids!

Wait ’til you see how we worked together to capture awesome memories for this beautiful family!

Karen-2

Hien chose the prettiest lavender gown for this maternity and extended family beach session. The family wore neutrals and pastels for their photographs, and I loved the color scheme!

Karen-4Karen-11

I loved the blend of blushes, blues, and whites, and how could those darling children not make you smile? Isn’t this location the dreamiest?

Karen-61Karen-18Karen-56

These two cousin cuties. I love how serious their expressions are! And those outfits were just perfection.

Karen-72Karen-26

These beach maternity images were some of my favorites! The pairing of pastels against the moody water and sky will always have a place in my heart. Those adorable laughs between Hien and Kaia won’t soon be forgotten. I can just see those pictures paired with some photos from Kaia’s newborn session. And of course, Hien can complete the look with a sweet image of Kaia with her grandparents.

Karen-29Karen-41Karen-48

We all had a lovely little time together. It’s the sweet relationships between family members that I always love, that really complete the session! Plus, who doesn’t love the beach?! So much fun!

Looking Up Photography – Family Master Photographer Certification

Fellow professional photographers and clients alike have asked me about this, so I wanted to share a short blog post about this recent recognition. I also wanted to inform you about what makes up the application process!

First, you may remember that I am in possession of another of the National Association for Professional Child Photographers‘ (NAPCP) Master Photographer Certifications. After receiving my Newborn Master Certification, I knew certification in the Family category would be a goal I hoped to meet in 2021. For those who may be unfamiliar with the group, NAPCP is an association of professional photographers who are recognized in the child and family photography industry. The association’s members include some of the best across the more specialized categories within child and family photography.

According to NAPCP, “The NAPCP Master Photographer Certification Program rewards NAPCP members by acknowledging their excellence in the craft of professional photography. The NAPCP evaluation panel is constantly reviewing hundreds of images submitted in portfolios before awarding Mastery certificates in each category.”

Similarly to when I applied for Newborn Master Certification, I first carefully assembled a portfolio of Family Photography imagery. I included some of my favorite photographs in the portfolio, in addition to the best technically proficient images that were so important for scoring purposes. Once again I asked questions. I asked the opinions of my professional photographer peers, in addition to friends and loved ones. I reviewed my portfolio and reviewed it again to ensure it met the extremely specific requirements. There isn’t anything quite so nerve wrecking as pressing the button to “Submit”! I was on pins and needles, anxiously awaiting my results. It can be so difficult to wait sometimes (even with that old adage about “good things” in mind …)!

The feedback from the judges was “Wonderful portfolio. Love the range and variety you showcased here, capturing authentic expressions in each. Great job.”

I am so proud to have my name among the other Master Photographers in the Family category.

Master Photographer Certification in the Family category is an amazing opportunity and accomplishment for me. It is incredibly validating to know that your livelihood isn’t just ‘work’, but also that it is appreciated by your peers, and brings joy to others!

Many thanks, NAPCP!

Family and Maternity Beach Sessions | Greenwich Beach Photography

Family is a beautiful thing. Whether it’s a new family with an expectant mother, or a family of ten, the many special memories that you make together deserve to be captured in a beautiful way.

Part of what makes a session beautiful is the setting. While my studio is one of the best places for newborn photography, the beach is one of the most gorgeous places for family and maternity sessions. Specifically, Tod’s Point (Greenwich Beach), with its deep blue ocean waters offset by the colors of the sandy shore. It makes for one of the most scenic locations for both a family or maternity session.

The photos below speak volumes about how this location can serve you and your family. From special moments with mom and dad, capturing the time before they meet their new baby, to walks with the kids on the beach set against the great blue sky, all the way to posed family portraits where you can take in every detail – this is the place to be if you want to capture those special family memories. The atmosphere of Greenwich Beach evokes the summer feel that we’re chasing all year, and after our session you’ll be able to bring that atmosphere home and display it in your home.

Displaying your professionally captured and edited family or maternity pictures is incredibly simple with my sessions. In either the family or the maternity sessions, an 11″ x 14″ print is automatically included, with additional prints available. All of my sessions always start with a pre-session questionnaire and a planning phone call/email, which also serves as a chance for us to get to know each other before the shoot. You’ll also get styling advice, and off-site hair and makeup is also available for a small fee, which is especially useful for the sometimes unpredictable beach weather. My sessions are designed from the ground up to be both fun and stress-free, so all you have to do is enjoy your time together.

This year, take your family to the beach and make some new memories to enjoy for years to come.

As soon as Greenwich Beach opens, I’ll be booking summer and fall sessions, so don’t hesitate – contact me here to book your session today!

Enjoy!

Timeless Family Moments | Connecticut Newborn Photographer

Every great love story has a beginning. This family got its sweet start about a decade ago, when dad and mom met through mutual friends. Now they have two beautiful children and a family legacy. When they welcomed their newest son, they knew it would be the perfect opportunity to update their family photos. They requested a mix of posed and candid images, and I enjoyed sharing genuine moments with them, filled with laughter and plenty of smiles over their very busy two-year-old. Speaking of big brother, he is nothing but a delight! He enjoys playing with trucks, jumping and bouncing, and playing ring-around-the-rosy, and he’s acclimated well to his adorable new sibling. Mom shared that he is very active and loving, and also quite social. He wasn’t shy when it came to taking photos, and enjoyed the spotlight very much (that always makes my job easier!).

Classic and timeless were the words mom and dad used when describing their personal taste, and so I modeled their session to suit their decor and the types of images they wanted. They plan on incorporating the images on some special wall spaces in their home, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with. When it comes to spending time as a family, these four enjoy visiting grandparents, and heading to the beach, where their little one can chase the gulls. Their family is shaped around love and honesty, and they are genuine, warm and caring people. “We were just so excited to be growing our family”, adds mom, “We wanted to capture our kids during such a special and fleeting time. We hadn’t done these images before, so we followed your lead, and ended up with great shots of the four of us, and the baby, of course. When we set out to find the right person, we looked for someone professional, and caring with a lot of experience with newborn photography!”

I always try to capture the tiny details in my newborn sessions, and I sure fell head over heels with the little toes and lips below! What a sweet family. If you are interested in booking a session in our studio, please contact me here!

Enjoy!

Sibling Love | Child Photography in Greenwich

The sibling bond is such a precious thing. No matter where life takes you, you always have the love of your brother or sister to carry you through tough circumstances and to celebrate life’s joys. That’s the bond that I was privileged to photograph when this wonderful trio came into my studio with their loving parents. They are a tight-knit family of five in Riverside, and very much in love with this sweet new addition. Mom and dad first met in New York City about thirteen years ago, and now they have three beautiful children to celebrate. Their family values “kindness, respect and honesty”, and I can certainly see how they exemplify these in their everyday lives. They are patient and caring parents, who never overlook an opportunity to let their children know how loved they are.

For this classic and elegant newborn session, I designed the set with pretty neutral tones and soft hues that coordinated with the family’s home decor. The big brother and sister are two and five years old, and they were so helpful and sweet to their brand-new sister. They wanted to help hold her and comfort her, and baby was very obliging. Her full head of hair was just adorable, and mom in particular was relieved that all three children were so happy to be in front of the lens. I felt privileged to be a part of this new season in their lives, and to watch a family fall into their new roles.

Some moms worry that their children won’t cooperate during the session. My friendly advice to all my clients is to “let it go”… and let me take the wheel! I create an atmosphere in my Greenwich studio that is welcoming and cheery, so that children feel at ease. I connect with them on their level before the session begins, and make sure there’s music and fun so that their personalities shine. I love children, and have endless patience for them. No matter how wiggly you may anticipate they will be, I will love every moment! To book, please contact me here!

Front and Center | Greenwich Maternity & Newborn Photography

Not all photographers have the pleasure of following the journey a woman takes through motherhood, but I had the wonderful privilege of capturing a part of Armida’s journey. She and her husband Erik chose one of my Belly to Baby Packages, which includes a maternity session and a newborn session. We had a wonderful time in both sessions, and I’m so excited to finally share their portraits!

For the maternity session, we wanted to go for a contemporary style, with the focus on Mom’s precious baby bump. She wore a lovely white tulle dress, matched with a bright white backdrop. I loved playing with the soft light for this session. Armida gave me creative freedom in both sessions, and it was fun bringing her vision to life. She and Erik looked just gorgeous together, and in each of the pictures made a point of highlighting the precious little girl growing inside. Their little one is front and center, and that carried forward to their newborn session, when little Catalina was born!

We wanted to focus on a natural feel to the newborn session, with a creamy pink and peach palette. We set beautiful Catalina on a bed of furs, and gently added textures in around her to complete the scene. I was able to get a lovely shot of her adorable squishable face against the white fabrics, which made the little floral accessories pop out all the more. She looked so cute lying in the soft wicker basket, with only a bolt of lace draped over her. Erik and Armida wore simple, darker outfits to ensure that Catalina was front and center, but the whole scene was what was most precious. The three together, bound together in love and with the most joyful smiles on their faces, made the session one to remember! It was a privilege to capture a part of their lives together in my Greenwich studio.

No matter if you’re just beginning your journey through motherhood, or if you’re about to welcome your little one into the world, be sure to capture these special memories in a portrait session. These unforgettable moments stay with you forever when preserved in  heirloom keepsake photographs! Contact me here to book your session today!!

Colorful Comfort | Stamford Newborn Photographer

Newborn sessions are my passion. So when this wonderful family from Stamford, CT got a hold of me to book their session, I was very excited to capture their special joy in my Greenwich, CT studio! Talking with parents Sandy and Julio made it clear how much they loved their new daughter, and how much they loved color. We made sure to surround their precious little one with a beautiful palette in her session.

Their newborn, Dahlia, was born into a joyful and loving family, and has three older siblings: Sofia, Arianna, and Aurelie. We got the whole family in the pictures, and I loved how they all looked together. The center of the show, of course, was little Dahlia, and she was a shining star! We focused on a palette of muted and darker tones, with pops of color to highlight her precious features. We surrounded her with the softest furs, and a bit of lace for some texture, and swaddled her in a warm, pink blanket to complete the setting. It was a scene centered on colorful comfort. Her tiny toes were begging to be captured, and I made sure to get every crease and wrinkle in the shot.

Another scene was with Dahlia lying in a basket filled with white furs and lace, atop a light pink, patterned floor. I love this shot because of the simplicity of it. I tend to stay away from busyness in newborn scenes, because I want all of the attention on the beautiful little human. In this session, there were so many beautiful humans, though, and I loved capturing all of them! Little Aurelie was so precious as a brand new big sister, already acting as a little mother. I loved her curly hair and her bright smile. She loves to dance, and the session was made even brighter with her dancing around the room!

Mom and dad found me through a Google search, and loved my portfolio so much that they just had to have a session. “We absolutely loved every set design you chose!” Sandy said, “I’m amazed at how you kept Dahlia asleep, comfortable, and happy for the entire shoot! The girls all had a great time.” It was such a joy and pleasure to meet this wonderful family, and to capture everyone in this newborn session. If you’re in the market for a photo shoot, look no further! Contact me here to reserve your session.

Enjoy!

Legacy of Love | Greenwich Maternity & Newborn Photographer

There’s nothing like watching a friend you’ve known for years finally get something they’ve always wanted. That’s what I was able to experience when Peter married Natalia, and when they had their first child together. Peter has been my personal trainer for 8 years (I met him when my daughter was only 1!). I remember years back how excited he was to have kids someday. Most of his clients had children and always talked about them, which only fueled his passion. Looking back, he’s thankful for that time, as he was able to get a lot of free advice and knowledge of the joys and challenges of parenting.

Peter is originally from Massachusetts, while Natalia is from Mexico. They ended up meeting at a park in Greenwich, and it was love at first sight. When he first told me about Natalia once they started dating, he said that he had met “the one”. I remember being so excited for them! Now, years later, I had the precious joy of doing both their maternity and newborn sessions.

For the maternity session, I loved finding creative ways to highlight Natalia’s belly bump, and used simple things like a white backdrop and a single cloth to let it have the spotlight. Both Peter and Natalia were glowing when they arrived for the session, so eager and excited to meet their little bundle of joy. They were about equally as happy as they were when they got married, which I witnessed when I photographed their engagement session and their civil ceremony in Greenwich (their wedding was in Mexico). I distinctly remember the big smiles they had during both events.

When their baby boy finally arrived, they were over the moon! The newborn session went like a dream, and we had a lot of fun with a variety of scenes. For one, we swaddled him in lots of fur, making for a soft picture full of cuteness. In another scene, we set him in a basket full of blankets, and went for a grayscale palette to highlight the pops of blue, as well as his precious skin tone. Some of my favorites from the session, though, were when everyone got in the picture. Peter and Natalia were grinning ear to ear, and you could tell that Peter was so proud of his newborn son, while Natalia showered him with love. All I could think of was how precious waiting is when you realize the value of what you will receive.

If you’re in the same boat as Peter and Natalia were, then you need to check out my Belly to Baby Package – it’s the perfect package for you! Contact me here to reserve your session today.

Enjoy!

Knit Together With Love | Maternity & Newborn Photography in Connecticut

A wonderful delight of mine is in seeing a family that is tight knit and woven together with love – so try to imagine how elated I was to capture this beautiful family in their maternity and newborn sessions! This wonderful four-piece lives in Westchester, CT, and ended up choosing my Belly to Baby Package, to capture the time before baby enters the world, and directly after they join the family. “We moved to Westchester from Brooklyn, New York, in 2016, after having lived there for 15 years,” Evan, the father, says, “we have two dogs, love to travel, listen to music, and watch tv/movies. My daughter, Madeleine Harper, loves to dance, play dress up, anything Disney, and loves to cook with my wife, Andrea, and I love sports.” Something I love about this family is how much they like spending time with each other, and you can tell they have such a joy for each other in both of their sessions.

For the maternity session, we wanted to get some outdoor shots, with a focus on natural light and more journalistic pictures. We also wanted to get the whole family in the shot, but of course, with a special focus on mom. She wore a lovely pink dress that, when coupled with her natural beauty, made her stand out amongst the sea of green behind her. Dad and Madeleine joined her under the fresh blooms, and Andrea and Madeleine wore a couple floral headbands to match. Their sweet, precious older daughter is loved dearly by her parents: “Madeleine has a sweetness to her, especially in her eyes. She is very excited to be a big sister! We loved to capturing her lovely personality in the session.”

For the newborn session, we welcomed baby Riley into the world on a bed of white fur and gray lace, swaddled in a soft pink blanket. None of that matches the cuteness of Riley, however, and you can especially see it when we laid her on a sea of blue, or in the tiny basket with her little purple flower headband. We wanted to focus on a documentary style as much as possible, and got a few of those shots during the newborn session. Madeleine was so excited to hug and kiss Riley, and we were able to capture this precious moment, as well as the wonderful moment as the whole family gazed down at smiling Riley.

It was a true joy to spend time with this family, let alone help them remember the most special moments of their lives together. They’re knit together with love, and it was amazing watching that love grow over time. That’s the value of the packages that I offer: you’ll never miss those precious moments together. If you would like to capture those moments, please contact me here, and rest easy knowing that you’ll always remember the best things in life, just like this beautiful family will.

Enjoy!

Celebrate Your Loved Ones Through Portrait Photography | Greenwich Connecticut Family Photographer

I strive to inspire my clients to celebrate their loved ones, their children, and their beauty through portrait photography. My dream for them is to have the images we create together become true heirlooms to cherish for generations to come.

Family is one of the most beautiful and wonderful things around. From the first “I do’s”, to the first child, all the way to sending your now-adult kids away to college, family is a journey worth capturing. I think everyone grasps the necessity for professional family photos, but when it comes to taking those pictures annually, it’s often met with excuses rather than excitement. Having professional photos taken requires some real work, and not just in deciding what to wear and where to have the session – they can be an investment as well. But they’re an investment worth making, and here are three reasons why you should have a session every year, and especially now in the fall!

The passage of time – It is in the nature of time to grow us, and it’s important to capture this each year, especially so for young families. Kids grow so quickly, like the colors of fall leaves, and having annual portraits taken will not only be a beautiful way to track their growth, but will also act as a visual journal of the memories of each year. This is important for your children, but also for yourselves as the parents of a rapidly growing family. In a family session, you’ll be able to get in the picture with everybody else, free from worry about any of the details that go into getting the perfect picture. Flow with the constant stream of change, and capture your family along the way.

The milestones you meet – Like the passage of time, the growth of your family means they will meet milestones along the way. Whether it’s the ability to sit up, the first birthday, the first day of school, a high school graduation, or anything in between, it’s important to capture these times in the life of your family. There’s something new each year, and after each one passes you’ll be able to look fondly at your family portraits, and remember the wonderful moments of the year. Photographs are the perfect way to keep a memory alive, and the more that you capture, the more that you can cherish.

The memories you make – The only things in life that truly become more valuable over time are your memories. Life is constantly moving forward, but it is a blessing to look back over all of the wonderful times you’ve lived through, especially as a family. The beauty of a family photo session is that you get to make it how you want it to be, and capture your own unique and beautiful memories to treasure. Maybe you have a favorite family spot where the autumn colors are perfect, and you want to have a picnic-themed session there, or maybe the whole family loves the way the city looks in the fall – no matter what it is, make it special to your own family. If you center your portraits on who your family is rather than making sure everybody is smiling, you’ll get so much more out of them, and make precious memories at the same time.

Those are just three reasons for having annual family portraits taken, and I’m sure you can think of a few more. The preparation and the work that goes into your session is so worth it, because your family is worth the effort. Mark the passage of time, memorialize the milestones along the way, and capture each beautiful memory. You won’t want to miss them! So contact me and book your portraits – it’s the perfect time for a fall family session.

Enjoy!
